Cass Regional Medical Center physician Walter Costner, MD, FACS, and nurse Kimberly Swarnes, RN, BSN, received annual awards on May 9 during Cass Regional's Nurses Week celebration.
Dr. Costner, who specializes in bariatric and general surgery, was honored with the seventh annual Physician Excellence Award. Dr. Costner was selected by the nursing staff to receive the award along with $500 to give to a charity of his choice. The award was presented by Chief Nursing Officer Twila Buckner, RN, BSN, MBA, NE-BC.
Comments made by nurses who nominated Dr. Costner include: “Many times Dr. Costner has come in on his day off to do surgeries;” “Dr. Costner is the best educator in the operating room;” “The patient’s needs are always addressed first, then the nursing staff and lastly himself;” and “Dr. Costner is an advanced critical thinker, which makes him a great resource for questions.”
Swarnes, a nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit, was selected by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff as the recipient of the seventh annual Excellence in Nursing award, which was presented by Chief of Staff Jack Hudkins, MD, FACS. Swarnes also received $500 to further her education.Swarnes’ nomination letter read: “Kimberly is a fantastic nurse. She’s very intelligent, always calm, and compassionate to patients and their families. She is very diligent and thorough. She spots signs of trouble very early and acts accordingly. Kimberly is a wonderful asset to Cass Regional.”
