Gretchen Hellwig, RN, BSN, a full-time employee in the Medical/Surgical unit at Cass Regional Medical Center, was named the organization’s Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2017. Chief Nursing Officer Twila Buckner made the announcement August 3, during a reception.
Hellwig, an employee at Cass Regional since 2012, was nominated for the award by an array of Cass Regional Medical Center employees. She was chosen as Employee of the Quarter for representing the qualities stated in Cass Regional’s vision and mission statement.
“Gretchen is an excellent seasoned nurse,” Social Worker Cheryl Stice, MSW, said. “She interacts well with patients and staff. She is a team player, often doing more than her share to obtain the ultimate goal.”
Hellwig said the best part of her job is working on the inpatient side of nursing. “Working as a charge nurse, I am able to be active in patient care and help educate and share my experiences with newer nurses,” Hellwig said. “I enjoy teaching.”
Hellwig said she was interested in nursing from a young age. “I’m not really sure why. I guess it was just my calling,” said Hellwig. She worked in a hospital atmosphere for sixteen years, in many different areas. She then left the hospital to work in home health for two years, but missed the excitement of hospital nursing. “I was excited to find a position open at Cass Regional Medical Center,” Hellwig said.
“On the Med/Surg floor we go to Gretchen for questions. Her knowledge is superb and she is the type of nurse we all strive to be,” said Kimberly Swarnes, RN, BSN. Hellwig received an astounding sixteen nominations.
Hellwig presently resides in rural Butler with her husband, Craig, and they have four children. Her family includes her sons Jacob and Tucker, her daughters Hallie and Carly and son-in-law Wyatt.
As Employee of the Quarter, Hellwig received a paid day off, a designated parking space for the quarter, an Employee of the Quarter recognition pin, an Employee of the Quarter crystal star award, a cake and balloons.
“I was a little embarrassed as I don’t like being in the spotlight,” Hellwig said. “But I’m honored my co-workers appreciate me so much!”
